As all-too-familiar concerns are raised around the detail of carbon offsetting practice, the Kakariki team want to remind readers to keep the big picture in view.

Voluntary carbon offsetting represents genuine, necessary, and commendable action on climate change. Without it - or a better alternative - we imperil the future of our planet and at-risk communities.

This opinion considers:

  • The role of voluntary offsetting within a responsible corporate strategy

  • The unique value of our natural carbon sinks, which already sequester carbon at scale

  • The challenge of bad projects within a continuously improving voluntary market
